Machine embroidery tools and calculators

Eight free, browser-based tools that turn the rules of thumb experienced embroiderers use into quick answers you can check at the machine.

Quick answer

Use the stitch troubleshooter when a stitch-out goes wrong, the stabilizer picker before you hoop, the hoop size checker and file format finder before you buy or load a design, and the time and thread calculators when you price or plan a run. The density converter translates spacing between software units.

Every tool on this page runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, nothing needs an account, and each one works on a phone propped next to the machine. They are built on the same rules of thumb that run through our guides, and each page explains its formulas and assumptions underneath the tool so you can see where a number comes from and when to override it. Treat the outputs as a well-informed starting point, then confirm with a test stitch-out on the same fabric and stabilizer, which is the core of our stitch-out tuning method.

Diagnose first: the stitch troubleshooter

When thread breaks, nests or the outlines drift, the troubleshooter ranks the likely causes for your exact symptom and adjusts the order for single-needle or multi-needle machines, the fabric and the thread you are using. It leads with the cheapest, most common checks (rethreading with the presser foot up, a fresh needle, a clean bobbin area) before anything that needs a screwdriver, and links to the full troubleshooting guide for each symptom.

Prepare the hoop: stabilizer picker and hoop size checker

Most puckering, distortion and registration problems start before the first stitch, with too little support or the wrong hoop. The stabilizer picker combines fabric, stretch, design density and how the finished piece will be worn or washed into one recipe. The hoop size checker compares the design to typical sewing fields from 4x4 (100 x 100 mm) upward and tells you the smallest one that fits with a safety margin. Plan and price: time and thread calculators

The stitch time calculator adds the parts of a run people forget: the machine rarely holds its top speed, every trim costs seconds, and on a single-needle machine every color change is a manual rethread. The thread usage calculator turns stitch count into meters of top and bobbin thread with editable rules of thumb, so you can order cones and wind or buy bobbins for a batch without running out mid-job.

Translate and convert: density converter and file format finder

Digitizing programs express stitch density in different units, and a design that looks right in one can be far too dense in another. The density converter links millimeters, points, lines per inch and lines per centimeter. The file format finder answers the questions that come up when you buy a design: which format your machine reads natively, which it can open, and what an unfamiliar extension actually is. For the background, see stitch density and embroidery file formats.
